In Kazakh nomadic culture, foals are classified with remarkable precision based on their age, season of birth, health condition, and temperament.

General Terms and Seasonal Classifications

  • Qulyn — The general term for a young foal born to a mare in the spring.
  • Qulynshaq — An affectionate term used for a foal.
  • Kun qaqty qulyn — A foal that was undernourished because its mother was used as a riding horse, limiting the foal's access to milk.
  • Budan qulyn — A crossbred foal resulting from different lineages.
  • Dobyr ayaq qulyn (or Marqa qulyn) — A foal born during the depth of the winter months.
  • Mayikti qulyn — A well-fed, content foal that has received ample milk from its mother.
  • Kenzhe qulyn — A "late-born" foal, typically born toward the end of May.
  • Qara qulaq qulyn — A foal that has matured and hardened quickly, making it ready to be tethered.
  • Zhetim qulyn — An orphaned foal whose mother has died or been killed.
  • Zhabaghy — A foal that has reached 6–7 months of age (named after the thick winter coat it develops at this stage).

Classifications Based on Temperament and Behavior

  • Shu asau qulyn — A wild, flighty foal that is exceptionally difficult to catch.
  • Eminshek qulyn — A foal that had to be bottle-fed or artificially hand-reared because its mother lacked sufficient milk.
  • Tilenshek qulyn — A "begging" foal that is accustomed to being hand-fed and habitually follows people around expecting treats.
  • Asau qulyn — An unbroken, stubborn foal that refuses to be tamed even when tied to the tethering line.
